The hida konro is a stove carved from a single block of keisodo clay (珪藻土).  Keisodo is a clay material that was formed from fossilized

marine plankton and volcanic ash.  The porous clay conducts heat evenly and efficiently and can withstand temperatures up to 1700℃.  Hida konro have been used in Japan for hundreds of years.  Put charcoal inside and start grilling! 

The outside of the stove is wrapped in Japanese washi paper.  As you use it, the stove slowly gets a little stained, a little blackened...maybe it will start to peel a little, maybe get a few nicks here & there...the natural progression of all things, yes. But on the flipside, it gains its own rugged character and pretty soon it will look like a noble veteran stove: well-used and well-loved, dependable as ever for more years to come.  Sometimes, we do get a little romantic here at the ikebana shop!
