Kutani Vases

These ceramic vases, made in Kutani, are called “shamoji-tate” (rice ladle stand) in Japanese.  They were originally designed to be a holder of the rice ladle!  The hand-painted vessels turned out to be so pretty that they were used as flower containers instead. Each vase comes with a mame-kenzan (“mame” means “bean”...a mame-kenzan is a “mini-frog”) to hold the flowers.  Of course, you can use them to hold other things like dessert spoons, pens, etc.!
