Tenugui Tapestry

Tenugui (literally “hand wipe”) is the all-purpose rectangular cotton cloth traditionally used as a towel or a headband to absorb perspiration.  In the old days, these are the towels that samurai put under their helmets before going to battle. The same towels are used by the modern-day kendo (the Japanese Way of the Sword) practitioner, tying it around his head before putting on his mask. These towels are also used as a washcloth in the bath. With the invention of better dyeing techniques in the Edo period (1615-1867) came tenugui in beautiful patterns.  Now people in Japan also use tenugui room decor. We now have some hand-dyed tenugui tapestry available at the shop.  Choose from 9 different designs and see if there is one that moves your heart!
